Math Dailys

We have really gotten started on a variety of the things we do daily in Kindergarten.  It has been a lot of fun to get into a routine.  Each morning after the students have hung up their bags, done their lunch cards, and now went to the IMC they can check a chart in our room to go to their Math Daily.  We have 4 of them that they rotate through.  These stations are math technology, math writing, math by myself, and partner math.  We have containers that have a variety of activities they can do in each area.  They are really learning about mathematics and having a good time doing this!

Our Class Promise

We spent some time early this week creating our class promise and then making our own face to go with the promise.  We came up with some important things that our classroom needed to have to be a successful and respectful place to be.  We made a list of these and signed our name that we would try our hardest to be successful at doing these items.  Then we created our "face" to hang up with our classroom promise.  It was a lot of fun and we were very excited for these to hang up.  They are in our room to be shown off all year!

Enjoy the photos!

Newsletter

Mrs. Hendershot’s Class
Friday, August 23, 2013

Dates:
*   August 28th – Early Out
*   September 2nd  - No School
*   September 11th – Early Out

Daily 5:
We will be starting our Daily 5 next week.  This is a set of stations that the students choose through during our reading time.  A note will be coming home shortly to explain all of these stations.  We will be starting next week with just practicing read to self.  The students will work on their stamina and progress towards reading 20 minutes alone.  It is a lot of fun to track our progress.

Math:
Also next week we will begin our first unit in math.  We have math workbooks we keep at school they will use.  Once we have completed a page I will send those home.  Be sure to look at the front and the back of the pages to see what your child is learning about.  Our first few pages spend some time discussing positional words.  These can be tricky so any extra practice at home is beneficial.

SS/Sci/Health:
Next week will be the start of our Social Studies, Science, and Health.  This is always a fun part of our day as we divide out the teaching of these subjects.  I am the teacher for all of kindergarten in Social Studies.  Mrs. Johnson teaches all the Science and Mrs. Norman teaches all the Health.  The students will rotate from room to room each day for their time.  They love to do this and it is a great experience for them to be in a different room.

Writing:
We have spent a lot of the past 3 days working on writing our names.  We will move into our handwriting curriculum next week.  The students will do 2 letters a day with a review of all the letters practiced on Friday.  Please take some time at home to practice these also!

Helpful Hints:
*    Start practicing letters and sounds.
*    Begin to practicing counting to at least 10.
*    Continue to work on writing names with a capital to start and the rest lowercase.

Making Chester

Today after reading our story about Chester we made our own Chester and talked about our feelings on the first day of school.  It is all hanging in our hallway so if you come to school please check it out!

Kissing Hand Snack

We read the story "The Kissing Hand" today!  We loved this story.  We were able to go on a tour of the school and hunt for Chester the raccoon while on the hunt.  We never did find him.  By the time we got back to our classroom Chester had disappeared back into the book.  He did leave us a treat of a chocolate kiss.

So for snack we had our own Kissing hands.  A sugar cookie cut into a hand shape with a kiss inside it.  They loved it!

Working hard~

Here are a few shots of us working hard today on one of the many activities we did in our classroom!  I hope this first day was as special for the students as it was for this teacher!

Class Picture!

Here are our class pictures from the first day.  Some are silly!  Hope you LOVE them!

What a first day!!! ~

We had an excellent first day of Kindergarten.  We were super busy all day long.  We spent a lot of time learning the rules and routines in our school.  All the students tried very hard to learn them as best they could!  We will continue to keep practicing these as the days continue on!  We started out of our and ended our day the same way.  We were busying working on our social skills by having our center activities out!  Here you will see some pictures of just a few things we were able to do during this time!  Enjoy!
