The Holiday Season is in our classroom!

We have been very busy preparing for the holiday season.  In our classroom we each created our own stockings to hang on the "fireplace" and are hoping that Santa makes a stop in our classroom.
Next we spent a lot of time creating some one of a kind "reindeer" to hang in our hallway.  It has been so much fun!  Hope you enjoy looking at these photos!

Reading
We are continuing all of our work in our Daily’s.  The students have been working very hard on their writing in their journals.  Each day they have a sentence to copy and fill in the ending of it with a variety of different words.  Their job is to sound them out the best they can to figure out the spelling of the word.  They are doing a very nice job.  Ask them to write something for you at home to see how much they have improved.  We have been working on final sounds in words.  This can be tough so practicing at home is helpful.

Word Wall Words!

Hello!

We hope that you are noticing a green paper with 2 to 3 words on it coming home at the beginning of each week.  On the top of this paper is states, "Word Wall Words".  These are some of the Kindergarten Word Wall Words and these are the ones that we are focusing on during that week at school.  So I will send that paper home for you to practice with your child.  You can have them say the word and if they already know the word then you can move on to having your child spell the words.  Please remember even if your child knows these words they are still very important words to practice and have in our memories.  These words are constantly in the books we read and it really helps if your child just knows them by heart.  :)

After a couple of weeks I will start sending home challenge words with students who already know the first 25 words.  We have a list that has a total of 155 words on it they can work on.  If they would end up knowing all those we then will spend some time working on how to spell these words as that is crucial when they go into 1st grade.

We have been working very hard in our Daily’s every morning.  We now have all 5 of them in place and do three each morning for 20 minutes.  While the students are doing their Daily’s I am working with small groups on a variety of reading skills.  Some are working on letters, sounds, blending, and reading books.  Keep working hard at home on all these skills.  It will show in the classroom!

Tips
·       Practice writing their name with only the first letter capital and the rest lowercase.
·       Work on counting objects to 10 or more!
Reading
We have spent a lot of our mini-lessons on working with the syllables in words.  The students have had a great time clapping out the sounds in the words and stating how many syllables they hear.  Ask them to do this at home and see how well they are doing.   We also are beginning to discuss the initial sounds you hear in words.  This can be a tricky thing to understand.  We will say a word slowly and try to hear what the first sound in the word is.  Please work on this at home as it takes a lot of practice to pick up on this skill.

Math
During our math time we have been reading, writing, and counting items to 5.  The counting has been pretty simple but sometimes writing our numbers can get a little tricky.  So we have number poems we have been using and they our in our BEE folders for you to use at home also.  We also worked on our ordinal numbers to the fifth.  We had a lot of fun lining up this way.  Ask about some of these things!

More Areas
We are very busy in our writing time lately.  We really are trying hard to get all our handwriting done so we can begin working on sentences.  We are making our way through the uppercase and will do numbers then work to lowercase.  We also have been finishing some sentences and creating pictures to go along with them.  We keep some of class books and others we bring home to share with you.

We have begun our Read to Someone time right after snack!  This is part of our Daily 5 system but we use it at another part of the day.  We only rest the first week and a half of school and then we begin to learn how to Read to Someone.  The students practice sitting, taking turns reading, and asking questions during this time.  We really enjoy hearing stories by all our friends.  Check out how much fun we have together!
