Word Writing

We have been really busy working on sounding out and writing words.  Here below you will see some pictures of us hard a work on our marker boards.  We love to use them and it is perfect to practice writing our words.

Daily 5:

We are continuing all of our work in our Daily’s.  The students have been working very hard on their writing in their journals.  Each day they have a sentence to copy and fill in the ending of it with a variety of different words.  Their job is to sound them out the best they can to figure out the spelling of the word.  They are doing a very nice job.  Ask them to write something for you at home to see how much they have improved.  We have been working on final sounds in words.  This can be tough so practicing at home is helpful.

Math:

We have spent the last 2 weeks working on counting to 10, writing numbers to 10, comparing numbers to 5 and 10, and finally ordering numbers to 10.  We have been very busy.  Please work on ordinal numbers to ten, as this is very hard for the students.  Also please continue to practice writing numbers at home as we do occasionally still write them backwards.  J

Writing:

We just finished up our handwriting curriculum.  The last section we have worked on was lower case letters.  These can be tricky but we are taking our time and really working on forming the letters correctly.  Now we will be moving on to writing words in sentences.  We will spend some time next week working on sounding out words we want to write.  Please practice this at home.

Helpful Hints:

     Work on your numbers all the way to 30 by counting and writing.

     Please have your child tell you the last sound in words. 

     Have your child clap out the syllables in words.

Book Club Groups

We have been working hard during our Daily 5 time!  One thing that I do with a variety of students is call them over to work on things.  They usually come over in a small group but at times are called over alone.  We enjoy this time and here is one of many of my book club groups.  More pictures to come of the other groups! 

This group is working on reading their new book club book for the first time.  We figure out the vocabulary, take a picture walk, read the title, and make predictions.  Then we read through it together the first time.  They take this book and put it with their bag of books to practice reading throughout the week.  I call them back over later in the week to do some activities to check on comprehesion!

Columbus Day

We learned about Christoper Columbus yesterday!  It was a lot of fun!  We learned he was an explorer but NOT the first person to discover America.  We thought that was just fine because he set sail on a boat to unknown land.  That was pretty cool to us!  After all our reading and learning about him we then made our own boat to look like 1 of the 3 that Columbus set sail with.  We were very interested in their names.  The Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria!  We loved to try and practice saying those!  After our boats were created we did a little vote if we would have set sail with Columbus!  By overwhelming numbers most of our friends would have went off on this adventure!  How fun!

Firemen Visit!

We ended our fire safety week by a visit from some really nice firefighters.  We were able to see them all dressed in their gear so we would not be afraid of them.  We also were able to learn all about that magnificent fire truck!  We LOVED it!  Please ask your child about this visit!  We sure were busy this week!  Keep checking back as we continue our journey in Kindergarten!

Kindergarten Firefighters

We have spent this last week discussing fire safety in our classroom.  Toward the end of the week we were able to make our own fire fighter hat to wear!  We loved it and don't be afraid to quiz us on some fire safety rules!  We learned A LOT!!

New and Old~

In Social Studies we have been talking a lot about long ago.  So we took some time to work with a partner and come up with things we have now (the new) and what they had long ago (the old).  Then we presented our ideas to the class.  It was a lot of fun to see the students coming together and working as a pair.  They had to figure out who was drawing when and who was talking about what.  They learned a lot about group work!  :)
