Johnny Appleseed Sequence

We spent a lot of time the last couple of days discussing the life of Johnny Appleseed.  We really discussed how he went about planting his trees and the different stages the trees would be in.  So we decided to do our own sequence of Johnny planting his trees!  We brought it home to share his story to you!  Enjoy!

Homecoming Spirit!~

We got into the homecoming spirit on Friday the 27th by decorating some footballs for the big game!  Then we were able to walk down to the high school for an all school pep rally!  Finally we got to watch the BIG parade go by!  It was a great day!!

Johnny Appleseed

We enjoyed a celebration of Johnny Appleseed on September 26th!  We made hats and LOVED wearing them that day!  Hope you enjoyed them at home too!

Dot Day Fun

On September 15th, International Dot Day is celebrated.  It is a day to be a creative thinker.  We read the story "The Dot".  Then we each had our own dot to create into anything we wanted.  This was a lot of fun to come up with ideas and see what each student decided their dot could be.  These were sent home and we hoped that you enjoyed them!

Name Puzzles

We have been continuing to discuss the letters and this week we spent some time on name puzzles.  Mrs. Hendershot cut these puzzles pretty trick so it took us a LONG time and a lot of help to get them back together.  They came home early on in the week.  But here are some pictures of our frustrating fun!  :)

Daily 5:

The last 2 weeks we have been working on our Daily 5.  We now have all of the five dailies in place and working in our classroom.   We do Read to Self, Work on Writing, Listen to Reading, Word Work, and Read to Someone.   They are doing a very nice job on these.  During Read to Self the students read to themselves books they have picked.  During Work on Writing we write in our journals and practice our writing.  Also we have been working on rhyming and sounds.  It is always a good thing to practice with your child. Ask your child about all of our work during the Daily 5.

Math:

We have spent the last two weeks in math working on patterns and graphs.  We have talked about the different types of graphs there are like a picture graph and a bar graph.  We had a good time with this because we graphed some of our favorite things.  The patterns were fun because we were able to make sound, movement, shape, and color patterns.  Ask us to show you this.  We will be moving on to numbers next! 

Writing:

We are almost finished with our capital letters in handwriting.  Please continue to practice these letters at home.  The correct formation is important to their success as an early writer.  We will now move on to the lower case letters.  These can be tricky too!  Thanks for all your hard work on their writing skills!

Helpful Hints:

     Practice the sounds each letter makes in the alphabet.

     Begin writing numbers to 10 and beyond. Watch for backwards numbers.

     Work on words that rhyme.  You say a word and your child will tell you a word that rhymes with it. 

Pete the Cat!!!

Last week we also spent a bit of our time reading Pete the Cat and creating our own Pete the cats to hang in the hallway.  If you have time you should come check them out.  We each picked our favorite color to create the shoes that Pete is wearing.  It was a lot of fun to do this activity!
