Math
We have been very busy in our math.  We spent the last week working on counting by 10’s to 100, 5’s to 100, and 2’s to 10.  We got the 10’s and are making progress on the 5’s and 2’s.  We will also start working on money.  We first have to recognize the penny, nickel, and dime.  Then we will learn their amounts!

Reading/Writing
We have been really pushing through our book club books.  We are very close to getting re-tested to see if we are able to reach our final level of the year.  Please continue to read at home as this will help when I do begin to test for their final level.  In writing we have spent some time working on adding our own voice to the things we write!  We have talked about words that will allow a reader to know how we feel.

Reading
We have really been working on a variety of comprehension strategies in our classroom.  We are working on Metacognition, Schema, making a picture in your mind, determining importance, questioning, and inferring.  All of these take a lot of time and require your child to think about what they are reading in their book club books.  Please ask them to tell you what each of these mean!

Math
We started our new math chapter on numbers to 100 this week.  It has been a lot of fun to work with larger numbers and see how far we can count and write.  Everyone has worked very hard on all of their math.  Please keep working on writing and counting to 100!

Science/SS/Health
In Science we are continuing to work on their wood unit but have moved to the paper side of it.  The kids love testing out the different papers!  In SS we have been discussing map keys and how to use them.  We also spent a little bit of our time discussing how to help others.

Writing
You should see us write!  We have been working very hard on writing good sentences.  The students are working on remembering a capital letter and periods at the end of their sentences.  Also we have spent a lot of time lately working on writing more than the basic “I like” sentences.  Have your child show you their writing skills at home!

Math
We have been very busy finishing up our subtraction work and beginning our work with numbers.  Subtraction has been harder than they thought and need to be reminded that the first number tells how many; the 2nd number tells how many to take away, and finally the last number tells how many are left.  Keep working on this at home.  In our new unit on numbers we are working on skip counting by 10’s to 100, beginning some counting by 2’s and 5’s also.  This can be harder so we are taking extra time to make sure we understand this concept!

Math
We finished up our Chapter 9 on beginning addition and now moved on to actual addition steps. This can be very tricky for some to understand.  We hope by taking our time your child will understand the concept.  Please continue to make time to practice this at home as it shows in our classroom!

Reading
Many of us moved to a new level in our book clubs so we are enjoying reading harder books.  If you did not move to a new level they are continuing their hard work at their level.  We are really working on the strategies of sounding out, looking at the beginning sound, and chunking the word to figure it out!

Reading/Writing
We have been working hard on comprehension strategies in our reading.  We are working on metacognition which; is thinking about our thinking and schema.  Schema is what we already know about what we are reading.  Always ask questions at home as they read.  In writing we have been writing about President’s Day!

Math
We spent some time working on counting by 10’s to 100.  Please practice this at home to reinforce it.  We also started our new chapter on basic addition skills.  We have worked very hard on these and are hoping to continue to add bigger numbers together.   This can be a tough concept for many to understanding so any practice at home will be very helpful to their learning of basic addition.  We have spent a lot of time figuring out different ways to make numbers.  Check their papers as they come home to help practice our skills.
