We were busy last week making our own Snowman Glyph. The students created a snowman based upon answering certain questions. All the questions dealt with the students and winter. Their snowman had a certain hat if they were a boy or a girl. The number of buttons is how old the student is. The scarf is a certain color depending if they like winter or summer. Finally the eyes on their snowman are a certain color depending on if they like hot chocolate or not.
Enjoy! These are hanging in our hallway so be sure to stop and check them out!

5:
We
have spent the last couple of weeks working very hard on our reading
skills. We have reviewed how we
look for clues on the page when we come to an unknown word. These clues could be pictures or having
it make sense in the sentence.
Then we started working on “chunking” the word. This is when you find parts of the word
that you know. This could be
finding a word wall word in the sentence.
You figure out that part then try to figure out the rest of the
word. Please practice these skills
at home.
Math:
We
finished up our work on 2D and 3D shapes and fractions. It was a lot of fun to work on whole,
half, and fourths. Now we are
moving on to the beginning stages of addition. We will be spending a lot of time go over what different
numbers make a certain number.
Then we will talk about 1 more and 2 more to start us off. Our goal is for all students to be
fluent in adding and subtracting to 5.
So any practice at home is welcome!
Health:
In health we have spent
the past 2 weeks working on road signs, wearing seat belts, bicycle safety,
stranger danger, and community helpers.
This has been a lot of fun as we have learned a lot about all of these
topics. We are really enjoying all
the nonfiction books that go a long with the topics. Also all the practice activities we are doing help us too.
Helpful
Hints:
*Have your child read their
take home book to 2 different people and ask them questions about the story.
*Begin practicing some basic
addition like 3 plus 1 etc.
Please keep having
your child read the take home books to you at home. This is very important this time of year as we are really
working on our reading skills.

Cool Resolutions
We spent some time talking about at the beginning of a new year people like to make resolutions. So we talked about what types of resolutions we could make for ourselves. Then we created penguins and put our resolutions on them. They are hanging in our hallway. We hope you can take some time to stop in and read what we hope to be able to do in 2014!
Guest Readers
We had some guest readers one morning last week. Some of the 3rd grade students came in and read some poetry to us. We had a great time listening to them read and many of us are excited to be good readers like they are!
New Years Face
Right after our Holiday break we came back and made our face with a party hat and blower to celebrate the new year. We discussed what we did over our breaks and what it means for it to be a new year!
Word Games
We have been busy reviewing our first 46 word wall words this past week. We took some time to play partner games like "I am thinking of a word with"... They had a lot of fun guessing each others words!

We
have been very busy in our reading groups reading new, harder books. Many of the boys and girls now have a
new reading level. They are so
proud of their accomplishments. We
have also been working very hard on our Word Wall Words. They are even working on spelling them
correctly. We have also spent some
of our time working on the story elements. These would be the characters, setting, problem, and
solution. Now while reading with
your child please ask these questions as they are very important to their
comprehension.
Math:
In math
we have been busy working on the 3 dimensional shapes and fractions. The shapes we learned are cone,
cylinder, sphere, and cube. They
found these all over and talked about objects that are these shapes. This coming week we will be working on
halves and fourths. Our main focus
will be on equal parts! Ask your
child about the new shapes as we are really working on their names!
Health:
We previously have
worked very hard on learning the character traits. We discussed the last 3 before Christmas break. Those were citizenship, fairness, and
caring. Now since we have been
back we are working on the 5 senses.
We have done a variety of activities to help us understand the senses
that we have. Ask your child to
tell you about all 5 of them!

Chalk Train
We were unable to do all our work with the Polar Express this year but we did do one fun activity that deals with chalk and making it look like all the snow and smoke that goes along with the Polar Express. We had a great time doing this activity! Hope you enjoyed it when it came home!
Opening Presents
Here are a few photos of the students opening up the books that I gave them! It was fun and great to hear how excited they were about the books!
Party!!
On Friday after our late start we were able to come to school and eat our party good right away! It was a lot of fun and we enjoyed all the great treats that we received! Thanks to all of those who were on the party committee!
Enjoy the photos!
